The American Cancer Society Grand Opening Fashion Show

The American Cancer Society is going to celebrate its island's Grand Opening with a fantastic fashion show at 2 PM on the 23rd of September. From the press release: "All of our models will be showcasing designs from RFL 2007 -- each choosing her own unique style and look, choosing from well known designers such as Nicky Ree, Bossa Nova, Calla, Rebel Hope, Digital Dragon, Analog Dog, ETD, Last Call and more."

What's more, in addition to the Metaverse Messenger Angels and Second Style Models, avatars on the runway will include RL cancer survivors! The island's actual opening will be at noon that day, but the paty will kickoff right after the fashion show, at 2:30. For further information, please contact Madison Donnelly in-world. Please go support this worthy organization!

Yahoo and The Sims 2

So, I'm logging in to Yahoo this morning, and I see out of the corner of my eye an avatar. Thinking it's an SL avatar, I click on the photo. I get taken to this. My first thought was 'Where's the love for SL?' One of the things that the mainstream press gets right about SL is that nearly everything's user-generated; that's one of SL's greatest strengths! So to trumpet this from The Sims 2 is kind of annoying to me.

How many fashion shows have we had in SL? Many many. Do we get Yahoo coverage? Newp. I understand that the world is probably more familiar with The Sims 2 than it is with SL, but it would be nice to see the press show the creativity our residents express, instead of always focusing on its darker side.

FuhfuhfuhfuhFashion

Thanks and apologies to David Bowie ... I seem to be on an Arts in the Titles bent tonight. Regardless, this article has some good stuff in it regarding the world of fashion in both RL and SL. Celebrity Trollop and Digital Francis weigh in on the potential of SL to help RL fashion mavens utilize this growing space.

Just a thought: Do RL companies really need to invest in an island to do business in SL? Why not just hire an MDC to build something for a one-time event, get in, get out, quick and dirty? Guerilla marketing, etc.

One final thing: Those two models side-by-side in the article? The SL girl is way hotter.

Who Are we? - Indira Bekkers

Second Life resident, Indira BekkersThis is the 12th in a series of largely demographic interviews that are conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I met Indira Bekkers out in Our Virtual Holland 3, one of the sims in which she has an eponymous fashion store. Appropriately, she is a fashion designer, specialising in elegant rather than outre clothing; she also like to dabble in building and scripting. She especially adores Second Life because she "learned so much in so little time and got to know people I would never have met in RL."

Roberta Beauchamp sizzles with new lines

I first discovered Roberta Beauchamp about a month ago. It was an accidental discovery that was more about being in the right place at the right time. I hadn't heard much about her, but I could already tell that she was going places. Now she's back with *two* new lines of clothing, Rag Couture and the Imogen Collection.

What separates one line from the other? Rag Couture, my personal favorite, is hand-drawn, while the Imogen Collection mixes hand-drawn with photosourcing. Rag Couture has a fifties housewife feel to it, with J'aime being my fave. It reminds me of Marilyn Monroe's infamous dress, only in creme instead of white. Other notable dresses are J'adore, which is the perfect cocktail dress; La Seduction, a flirty teal salsa number; and the Devo dress which offers two skirt options to suit your mood. You can find her new line in Imogen or Freude.

Tohru's little shop - "Fashion, onigiri and bunnie"

Fashion, Onigiri & Bunnie

Stylish goods for the loli, bishoujo or whacky bishounen, at Tohru's shop.

One of my favorite content creators is Tohru Kanami (who also featured in Annoying Japanese Child Dinosaur) who makes attractive skins, clothing and accessories.

Kanami's high-tech store in Wakeley is clean, elegant and not hard on the eyes. On the walls, among high-tech displays are Kanami's products. Her skins, while expensive, are very well done (always, people, always try a skin demo before you decide to buy), and her eyes frequently draw favorable comments.

Wall Street Journal Online on SL Fashion

The Wall Street Journal, that eminent publication of all things business- and finance-related, has reported on the fashion world of SL. Fortunately, unlike most RL media, the WSJ does not spend too much time on the "Holy cow, look at the weirdos" aspect, but instead delves directly into the ins and outs of clothing creation, and the politics of the fashion making subset of SL.

Additionally, there is a section, available to members only, that displays some examples of SL's fashion. If anyone in our audience has a subscription to the online version of the WSJ, go check it out and drop us a comment.

All in all, it's a respectable piece, providing some substantial information to its audience, and leaving off most of the sensationalism we've come to expect when the RL media tries to digest SL for its unfamiliar readers. It's this sort of serious coverage that will help bring sober minds to understand the benefits of our little universe.

Podcast: The Goods

I'll admit it; I have a crush on Torrid Midnight. Well, more specifically, on Torrid's voice, of which I became aware while listening to the Secondcast podcast, as posted previously. Fortunately for me, I can get my Torrid fix by listening to The Goods, Torrid's new podcast, which covers fashion and clothing making issues in SL.

Normally, I'm not much of a fashion hound; when you run around as a big, white, fuzzy werewolf, you're pretty well covered in the area of modesty (no pun intended). But I do admit that I find the whole area of clothing fascinating. The major portion of the podcast involves interviews and candid talk with leading (and up-and-coming) designers in SL, with a section near the end of the podcast devoted to the casters' picks for favorite clothes, stores, or related products and services. It's fun to isten to the guests talk about their likes, dislikes, influences, and problems in getting their designs out and worn. If you're at all interested in making and wearing clothing in SL, please give this podcast a listen. *sigh* Torrid's dreamy...
